Kentucky Hall of Fame Player

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Former Kentucky Mr. Basketball winner J.R. Vanhoose is among seven new members of the Marshall University Athletic Hall of Fame, the school announced earlier this week.Vanhoose, who led Paintsville High School to a state championship in 1997 and a runner-up finish in 1998, joins former Marshall football coach Jim Donnan at the head of the induction class.

The current girls’ basketball coach at Phelps High School, Vanhoose ranks fifth in all-time scoring at Marshall with 1,803 points and second all time in rebounds with 1,086. He was also an Academic All-American and All-Mid-American Conference team member during his career with the Thundering Herd.Donnan, a current ESPN college football analyst, coached football from 1990 to 1995 and led Marshall to the NCAA Division I-AA championship in 1992 and to championship game appearances in 1991, 1993 and 1995.

Others inducted into the Hall of Fame include:• Phil Ratliff, an assistant coach on the staff of current Herd football coach Mark Snyder since 2006, who was an All-American lineman from 1989-1992;• Byron Carmichael, a threetime All-Mid-American Conference soccer player and the school's all-time leader in men's scoring, who played from 1999 to 2002;• Anna Mitina, a four-time firstteam All-Mid-American Conference selection and the first women's tennis player selected to the Hall of Fame;• Tom Kies, a three-time All- Southern Conference player in men's golf and a 1988 All- American, who played from 1985 to 89;

William Harris, who starred in baseball and football and competed in wrestling, helping to introduce the program 1953.The new members will be inducted on Aug. 29 at a banquet at the Marshall Memorial Student Center and introduced to the crowd at the Thundering Herd’s opening game against Illinois State on Aug. 30
